National Audit Office GP SurveyResults January 2010 Aim of the survey was to: • Get GP’s views on the National Dementia Strategy (NDS) • What extent GP’s involvement in the NDS • GP’s attitudes towards dementia • GP’s knowledge of dementia
Results • 1001 GP’s responded to the survey • At least 5% from each of the 10 English SHA’s • Majority of the GPs that responded qualified after 1990
Results cont. Positive shift in attitude • 80% agreeing that it is important to actively look for early signs of dementia • Slight improvement in GP’s attitudes towards dementia management from 2006-2009
Results cont. • 71% they were confident in diagnosing • 58% confident about giving advice • 73% GPs felt lack of time was why they could not do enough for people with dementia • 69% GPs felt that they was a lack of social care support services to their practices • GPs had most difficulty with coordinating support services for carers and people with dementia
Results cont. • 57% GPs still unaware of local care pathways • 90% have a QoF register for dementia patients • 80% of those registers prompt to review the patient regularly • Reviews – 54% are a general health check • Only 12% are on assessment of need
Results cont. • 38% did not know about the strategy • 88% are not familiar with the strategy • 1.5% were involved in National Dementia Strategy consultation • 13% GPs had personally implemented change • 87% had done nothing • 18% of GPs reported that their discussions about the strategy had taken place with practice colleagues and staff
Results cont. Finally! GP’s knowledge quiz to test their knowledge on dementia and related issues was: • 2004 = 49% • 2009 = 49%
