The organization • Partners for Development (PFD) aims to improve the lives of the vulnerable and underserved populations in developing countries. • They work collaboratively with a range of groups to achieve sustainable change. • PFD focuses on strengthening community skills in our four core program areas: food security and nutrition, health, livelihood and enterprise development and climate adaptation • PFD is a recognized leader in innovation and implementing innovative effective programs
WHAT THEY DO • PFD works at the community level to meet basic human needs of underserved populations. This is done with self-help programs designed to build skills and self-reliance. • PFD’s programs are participatory and responsive in nature. Local partners take an active role in designing, implementing, and monitoring programs. • The programs are also designed to be consistent with local government concerns in order to maximize sustainability and appropriateness. • By collaborating with local counterparts the community develops skills in these key areas: • Training local health-care providers in prevention and treatment of primary health-care problems. • Providing technical assistance in start-up and support of small enterprises. • Promoting growth and enhanced capabilities of many partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs) locally.
Where they work • Africa • Eastern Europe • South East Asia
Program Strategies • Capacity building of NGOs and Community-based organizations; • Selection, training , supervision , and evaluation of village level workers • Micro-credit and village banking integrated with reproductive health and nutrition training • Empowerment of women • Development and marketing of tools for village and community surveys • Applied and operations research • Providing advice to Governments on sectoral implementation and planning • Establishing "Kids Clubs" for HIV-afflicted children and orphans • Improving food security and nutrition
Recommendation • I think PFD is a great organization for youth development professionals to get involved with. • PFD’s programs are different than others because they are innovatively developed so communities can sustain the programs on their own. • PFD uses self-help programs to build skills and self-reliance. This contributes to a sense of well-being and the ability to make choices through sense of personal competence (two of the NAS success criterion).
