Hooks Pulling in the Reader
Some types of Hooks • Question – engaging, takes the reader off-guard • Quote – from a book, well-known, popular saying • Dialogue – between 2 characters in a book or something you make up • Startling or strong statement – opinion or strong point • Interesting story/anecdote
How not to begin your paper: • Hi, my name is… • Today, I’m going to tell you about… • I hope you’ll like my story about… • You are going to learn about…
Questions • What is the truth? • How would you feel if the principal suddenly announced that there would be no more PE classes, only Study Skills? • Who is a person I would like to honor by placing his or her face on a coin? • What has my generation offered that no other before it has done?

Why did my grandmother have to drag the whole family to watch my baby sister stuff a bear?
Strong Statement/ Anecdote BAM was the sound that echoed through my ears the day that death tried to chase me down. The chaos started on a Thursday on Goodson Street. My cousin and I were walking down the street on our way to Pino’s Pizza. As soon as we turned the corner, a group of men were standing against the wall. “Ah! We ain’t in school now. You can’t beat up my little brother. Now you got to deal with me,” one of the men taunted.
