4. The author and illustrator are parts of the story, but what do they do? AUTHOR ILLUSTRATOR BOTH • The author writes the words in a story. • They think of the characters • They think of the setting • They think of the problem • They think of how the problem with be fixed. • They think of the end. • Then they write it all down for us to read. When they work together, the author and illustrator create stories and books for everyone to read. The illustrator draws pictures to match the words that the author wrote.

Parts of Story • The characters are the people or animals that the story is about. • The setting is where the characters are. • The beginning is what happened first. • The middle is where the problems start. • The end is when the story is finished. Let’s create a flow map from the story, The Little Red Hen • THE BEGINNING 1 • What happened first? • The Little Red hen wanted to make some bread. • THE MIDDLE 2 • What was the problem? • When she asked her friends for help, they all said no. She had to do all of the work by herself. • THE END 3 • What happened last? • The Little Red Hen ate the bread all by herself. If was not fair for her friends to eat it if they did not help.

9. Would you help the Little Red Hen? Would you like to be the hen or her lazy friends? Remember, the hen worked hard and got to eat the bread. Her lazy friends got to rest, but they did not get any of the bread.
