Timeline • Oct 2012: Ron Ranin and Maricar met with DOC regarding starting BSO • Nov 2012: First meeting with recruited staff members to discuss BSO • Dec 2012: BSO binder placed in every unit. • Jan 2013: work began on referral form • Feb: resident review at team meetings began • March: white boards up • April: BAT review with BSO team, Binders update • May: ON Shores representatives attended team meeting to review some concerns • June: BSO Flyers went out to all of Fairview

WE are ALL responsible for: • Supporting the Resident Bill of Rights in the care we provide • Responding to referrals for BSO support • Utilization of assessment tools including DOS, BAT, MMSE, • Develop and maintain plan of care for residents with responsive behaviours to direct care for staff members • Maintaining partnerships to support quality care provided to residents • Working with residents and family to address need • Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team for plan of care for residents • Documenting and communicating needs clearly • Maintaining knowledge and skills through on-going education to best manage responsive behaviours THE BSO TEAM

What We Have Done • BSO Resource Binders on all units • Introduced the ‘white board’ • BSO brochure • Educational flyers (e.g. behaviours that do not usually respond to meds, posted in the units) • BSO montesorri kit (trial in one unit) • Working on communicating the BSO Goals with the unit staff • ON Shores attended meetings to speak re different concerns • GPA Training for BSO Members • Life stories continue to be completed

  8. Success Stories • Overall team success improved with: • Involving interdisciplinary team members • Increasing meeting frequency, which seemed to keep up momentum and provide more opportunity for different staff members to attend

  9. Resident Success Stories • J.S: bath changed to evening, which seems to improve sleep, provide treats • I.M: music therapy • M.L: folding face towels.

  10. Challenges • Staff think of it as an additional work load • Reg. staff hesitant/unwilling to accept suggestions/recommendations from PSW • Reg. staff not open in sharing information with the team. • Having staff members utilize the white boards • TIME!

In The Works • MP3 program • Montessori training for BSO team by 2 of the members • Continued Education Flyers focusing on topics that impact care of residents exhibiting responsive behaviours • On-going education for members of the BSO regarding how to use the BAT and DOS tools • Unit rounds for a follow up introduction of BSO
