  4. Planning the change Exercise: How will we know a change is an improvement? Give an example of each type of measure. The Aim: to decrease traffic accidents among hikers and bikers by 50% within 3 months How? We’ll post a sign:

  7. Key Messages • Connect your efforts to your Aim Statement . • When developing your measures and operational definitions, link them to the aim statement to make the impact apparent. This will help you decide what to measure. • Annotate your charts to understand how the measure contributes to achieving your aim. • There is a one-to-many relationship between the outcome measure and process measures. • A system level approach is required. • Common operational definitions allow all LHINs to “speak the same language” when discussing measures. • This allows us to methodically apply QI science to accelerate change/learning across sectors and across geographies. www.HQOntario.ca

  8. Key Messages • Translating concept to action • Context does matter. • Operational definitions allow us to be consistent in our interpretation. As we work through, there are refinements (inclusion, exclusion etc). • Sharing the measures is intended to “generate light, not heat” • Sensemaking is a critical function of QI science • Measurement for Improvement allows us to understand the impact of changes on the ultimate outcome (our aim) • It is essential to articulate operational definitions to ensure that we are all speaking the same language (think “snow pants”) www.HQOntario.ca
