8. Why is Assessment Vital? • Know where the children are and where they need to go next (Target setting) • Have they reached their targets (Tracking) • What do we need to do to get them there (Interventions)

To achieve an ‘Expected’ level, your boat must: • Have a flag. • Be in colour. • Have seagulls above it. • Have a sun and clouds in the sky. To achieve an ‘Exceeding’ level, your boat must: • Have a captain. • Have an anchor. • Have fish in the sea.

Transition to Year 1- Assessing Pupil’s Progress (National Curriculum) • Was based on the successful introduction of using teacher assessment(TA) rather than just test results at end of KS1 • Builds on the effective assessment practices that are well established in EYFS • Provides a process that is consistent across both literacy and mathematics • Means strengthening teachers understanding and awareness of levels as well as national expectations. • Provides a basis for discussing targets for improvement with pupils, parents and carers • Provides detailed information for the next teacher/school • Reveals ‘gaps’ in curriculum and/or learning
