  1. CH 20 CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY 1. Apartment — units owned by a company or individual and rented to the people living in them.

  2. 2. Boundary— a property line established by a survey.

  3. 3. Civil Structure — a structure designed for public use, including roads, bridges, monuments, and other public projects, such as sewers and pipelines.

  4. 4. Commercial Building — a building used for professional offices, shopping centers, supermarkets, lodging establishments, or repair facilities.

  5. 5. Condominium — a living unit joined together with another, but owned by a separate families or individuals.

  6. 6. Construction — the process of using manufactured goods and industrial materials to build structures on a site.

  7. 7. Contractor — one who hires workers and directs building processes.

  8. 8. Flooring — wood, carpeting, linoleum, or ceramic tile used to cover the subfloor.

  9. 9. Foundation — the part of a structure tying it to the ground. It also supports the weight of the structure.

  10. 10. Industrial Building — structures that house companies making products and providing important services.

  11. 11. Infrastructure — basic facilities (water, sewage, and power systems) needed for a building.

  12. 12. Insulation — a material that resists heat passage.

  13. 13. Joist — a parallel beam extending from one wall to the other to support the weight of the floor, furniture, and people that will be on them.

  14. 14. Mechanical System — a system that provides convenience and comfort inside structures that provide shelter.

  21. 21. Stud— a vertical member of a wall frame. Usually made of wood 2” x 4” or 2” x 6” thick and spaced 16” or 24” apart.

  22. 22. Superstructure — the part of a structure placed on and above the foundation.

  23. 23. Surveying — measuring to determine boundaries of lots and acreage.

  24. 24. Utility — a service, such as electricity, water, or fuel, brought into a building.
