It most common in in the northern part of India, and has Persian and Islamic influences. • The most common instruments in Hindustani music include the sitar, sarod, sarangi, shehnai, tablaand tambura. Hindustani music places an emphasis on instrumental music, rather than vocals. Improvisations also plays an important role in Hindustani music.

Carnatic Music • Carnatic music evolved from ancient Hindu traditions and is most common in the Southern part of India. • Vocals make up a significant part of Carnatic music, rather than instrumentals, and there is more emphasis on composition than improvisation. • Carnatic instruments include mridangam, tambura, ghatam, kanjira, and chitraveena.
