    1. Casa de Misericordia (House of Mercy) Orphanage February 2008 Update

    2. General Orphanage Info There are 7-8 orphanages in the same area as Casa de Misericordia so all children that need to be placed somewhere have a place to go. The Casa tries to stay between 30 – 40 children, but take all kids that the government sends them. The children attend school through the public school systems in Piedras Negras. The schools have been very flexible with the orphanage – allowing new children to go to school even though all the governmental paperwork isn’t completed yet so they don’t fall behind. The public schools are also good for the children because it gets them away from the orphanage and interacting with other children their age. The school year there is essentially year-round, with a long break at Christmas and Easter and the month of July off.

    3. Update on the Children The orphanage has 33 kids currently. The two newest children to the orphanage arrived on January 5th. Their names are Yasenia who is 7 years old and Jesus Antonio who’s 5. They were placed at the orphanage due to “neglect” by the parents. The parents have visited the children once since they’ve arrived there. The children has a great Christmas – had lots of groups visiting with gifts and all the parents that are in the process of adopting children came to visit.

    4. Children Being Adopted Chuly’s adoption was final in late December right at Christmas. Joselin will be the next child to be adopted and they’re just awaiting the final decree that should be completed in March or April. Once that’s complete, Joselin will live with her new family in Georgia. There are currently 11 adoptions in process right now and they’re mostly for the older kids – which is great. The local government has passed a law now that is expediting the adoption process - if the parents do not show any concern for the children in the first month after they’re placed in an orphanage through visits, etc, they are able to begin the adoption process for the child. The orphanage has also established a relationship with an attorney in Monterey that is helping the children get their Mexican passports quicker, which is necessary during the adoption process.

    5. Meet the Parents One of the biggest reasons the children at Casa de Misericordia are so happy and well adjusted is the work of the House Parents, Ricardo & Carla. Two and a half years ago, the orphanage was desperately in need of house parents to care for the children. Ricardo & Carla would come to the devotionals on Wednesday evenings and when they were asked if they would consider the position, they declined because they owned a home and a business that was doing quite well. But they said that they would come and help for one week. Well, that week turned into another and into another……they eventually sold their business, rented out their house and stayed on as “Mama and Papa” to the children. Ricardo also leads all the devotionals at the orphanage – they really are exceptionally gifted and generous people who care about all these kids as they do their own. They have 3 children that live with them at the orphanage – Kathya who is 11 years old, Kristell who is 8 and Ricardo’s younger brother Raul who is 14.

    6. One Special Gift Jesus is 15 years old and was born with spina bifida, which is a birth defect that involved incomplete development of the spinal cord. He is relegated to a wheelchair, but at times is able to walk a bit with the help of braces and a walker.

    7. Update on the Sponsor a Child Program The program so far has been very successful – instrumental in raising over $15,000 for the orphanage Plain City UMC did a Christmas offering and raised $8500 Trinity UMC sponsored the cost of one child for the year for $3840 The King Ave UMW group has also sponsored the costs of a child for $3000 as well as contributed money for the student group to go on their mission trip there last December. Additionally, we now have $280 per month going to the orphanage from individual contributors and some one-time donations. We’re just getting started though…..the Missions Committee is going to begin reaching out to other churches to get them engaged in the program and is looking into starting a Scholarship Fund for the children at the orphanage that want to continue their education beyond high school. If you have an interest in getting involved in the Sponsor a Child program or making a donation, please get in touch with Sharon Wiles at sponsorchild@yahoo.com.
