We are going to tell you the true story of a sponge, but I will warn you it may be less funny and sound like junk. • It doesn’t live in a pineapple under the sea,but it is a filter feeder and a hermaphrodite-eey. • Its very absorbent with its collar cells of flagella, and its cells absorb food because the are like amoeba. • Of all of the other organisms it is the simplest, but in the U.S. they must be 5 inches to harvest.
It is found in many different colors that are found frequently, some examples are yellow, red, orange, purple, and green. • They first appeared 600 million years ago…which makes them Cambrian, and these under water dwellers can grow to the size of a human. • Their bodies are made of spicules and spongenthat are like a skeleton with many pores, and they can be found from shallow or deep water of depths to 8500 meters or more. • Some sponges have radial symmetry but most are asymmetrical, and once they stick to something they never move because they are sessile.
They do not produce eggs until they are at least three, and they quite often live in a colony. • They have a central opening to let the water out of them,in the scientific world it is technically called an osculum. • A one gram critter can filter one liter of water per hour for you,yet there are only 17 species used for commercial value. • So now you know they aren’t really like SpongeBob-they cannot dance, and they aren’t what they used to be considered-which was plants.
