  2. First of All…. • There was no North or South Carolina • It was just called the Carolina Colony

  3. Granting Land • There was a great amount of land and not many people heading over from the Old World to the New World so Charles II of England granted the land, that consists of the Carolinas, to EIGHT guys. • They encouraged people to move there and made money off of them

  4. Edward Hyde • Title: 1st Earl of Clarendon • Close advisor of Charles I, joined Charles II in exile • Clarendon County, SC

  5. George Monck • Title: 1st Duke of Albemarle • Captain-general • Albemarle Sound; Albemarle County, NC; 1st settlement in NC

  6. William Craven • Title: Lord Craven (later 1st Earl of Craven) • Helped Charles II financially • Craven County, NC

  7. John Berkeley • Title: Baron Berkeley • Good friend of Charles II

  8. Anthony Ashley-Cooper • Title: Baron Ashley (later 1st Earl of Shaftesbury) • Helped Charles II get his throne; Chancellor of the Exchecquer • Ashley and Cooper Rivers near Charleston, SC

  9. George Carteret • Title: Baronet • Proclaimed Charles II king, when Charles I was executed • Carteret County, NC

  10. William Berkeley • Knight • Was a friend of Charles I

  11. John Colleton • Later made a baronet • Supported Charles I in the English Civil War
