Measure Matter Laura Carter 4th grade science
Yesterday we talked about physical properties of matter. Name some physical properties of the computer in the back of the room.
Suppose you were studying a rock. You can see its color. You can feel its texture-how rough or smooth it is. But to find its weight, you must use a measuring tool. Do you know what tool you would use?
Some physical properties must be measured. Physical properties that must be measured are: length, volume, mass, and temperature.
I will learn how to measure matter. Watch Brainpop: Measuring matter
Tools for measuring length and distance Use a meter stickor a ruler to measure the length of an object. A meter stick is marked with lines and numbers that represent units of length called centimeters Use your ruler to measure the perimeter of your desk. Discuss the perimeter in centimeters with your group.
Tools for measuring length and distance What would you do if you needed to measure the distance around a curved object? Could you still use a meter stick? Why or why not. Suppose you wanted to measure the circumference of a tree. You could use a tape measure . A tape measure bends and could wrap around the tree.
Tools for measuring Volume Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up. Tools: measuring cup, measuring spoons, graduated cylinder
The graduated cylinder and measuring cup are marked with lines and numbers that represent milliliters. When measuring volume, line up the top of the liquid with your eyes. Watch DE: Measuring Volume (1:03)
Graduated Cylinder What is the volume of this liquid?
Volume of a solid Volume of solids are measured in cubic centimeters or cubic inches. Volume= length X width X height Measure the volume of your math book and discuss with your group.
Measure Mass Mass is measured in units called grams. A medium sized leaf is about 1 gram. A potato chip is about 2 grams. A larger unit of mass is a kilogram. A kilogram is about the mass of a medium sized text book. Tell your neighbor, Matter has mass!
Measuring Mass What do we use to measure mass? That’s right! A Pan Balance What unit of measure do we use to measure mass? That’s right! Grams! Watch DE: Measuring Mass (0.58)
Measuring Weight Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on an object. Use a scale to measure weight.
Measuring Temperature Temperature is the measure of how warm something is. Use a thermometer to measure temperature.
Exit Ticket: In your science notebook, draw examples of tools used to measure length and distance, volume, mass, weight, and temperature. Tell the unit of measure for each example.
