  2. Definition • An area of low-lying land that is flooded in wet seasons or at high tide, and typically remains waterlogged at all times. • Can be fresh or salt water

  3. Animals • Beavers • Alligators • Newts • Shrimp • Turtles • Crawfish • Birds(Many Types) • Frogs • Deer

  4. Animals Cont.

  5. Plants • Most marshes are home to soft stemmed plants such as grasses, shrubs, and wildflowers • High nutrient content in the soil makes plant life flourish and in turn, this makes the animal life boom

  6. Plants Cont.

  7. Ecology • Marshes usually found at border between land and water • They contain elements from both the environments • Most important abiotic factor is hydrology

  8. Hydrology • It is the study of the movement, distribution, and quality of water on Earth • Very important to marshland in order to prevent stagnation* • Can impact plant species by affecting growth • Animals such as beavers can effect hydrology by building dams and felling trees *to become stale or nasty

  9. Benefits • Can be used for water treatment • Bacteria and other organisms remove nitrogen and phosphorus found in fertilizer from water • Moderate stream flow • Helps mitigate flood damage • Support vast amounts of wildlife
