Objective of Skills Portfolio • Self-marketing tool to assist with transition from school-to-work. • Assists with self-assessment, career planning and preparation for job interviews. • Preparation as important as final product • Helps you learn what you know, what you’ve done and how to articulate and illustrate this – Critical for interviews!

  4. Objective Cont’d • Allows you to showcase your best work to a client or employer. • Many corporations now have employees document work in portfolios. • Intended to be a work-in-progress.

  5. Background • Portfolio is developed around specific pre-determined skills ex. Learning, Managing Conflict • Skills set based on research of U of G prof Dr. Fred Evers • Evers analyzed skills of students/grads working in orgs in Canada

Background cont’d • From this emerged 18 skills which form the basis of the portfolio • Each of the skills falls into a broader category called a ‘Base Competency’ • They include the following: Managing Self: • Learning • Personal Organization & Time Management • Personal Strengths • Problem-Solving/Analytic

  7. Background Cont’d Communicating: • Interpersonal • Listening • Oral Communication • Written Communication Managing People & Tasks: • Coordinating • Decision-making • Leadership/Influence • Managing Conflict • Planning & Organizing

  8. Background cont’d Mobilizing Innovation & Change: • Ability to Conceptualize • Creativity/Innovation/Change • Risk-Taking • Visioning *Definitions of Base Competencies & Skills to be provided by faculty.

  9. Structure – Section 1 • Mock Cover Letter & Resume - must be developed using an actual job description – include job description in your portfolio - job chosen must be attainable – don’t shoot too high or too low - Resume – Max. 2 pgs. - Cover Letter – Max. 1 pg.

  10. Structure – Section 2-5 • Interview Questions - Must answer all questions under each base competency – see handout) per Base Competency using the SAR formula - Each response a couple of paragraphs. - Each response must be supported by 1-2 pieces of evidence

Structure – Section 6 • Table Listing Strengths and Areas Needing Development - helpful to generate this list using the skills provided for interview questions - likely they will become obvious as you select your interview questions - review each question and decide which ones you could answer easily, and which ones you would get stumped on – this will highlight strengths and areas needing development

  12. Examples:SAR Formula • SAR – Formula to be used to answer interview questions for your portfolio. • SAR = • Situation (or task/problem) • Action Taken • Result/Outcome

  13. Example: Interview Response Using SAR • Skill: Leadership/Influence • Question: Give me an example of a time when you showed initiative and took the lead.

SAR cont’d • Situation (S):Advertising revenue was falling off for my college newspaper, The Stetson Reporter, and large numbers of long-term advertisers were not renewing contracts. • Action (A):I designed a new promotional packet to go with the rate sheet and compared the benefits of Reporter circulation with other ad media in the area. I also set-up a special training session for the account executives with a School of Business Administration professor who discussed competitive selling strategies.

  15. SAR cont’d Result (R):We signed contracts with 15 former advertisers for daily ads and five for special supplements. We increased our new advertisers by 20 percent [quantities are always good] over the same period last year.

  19. TIPS: • Start Now! • Brainstorm about everything you have accomplished to help you answer the interview questions (including school, work, volunteering, sports, extracurricular involvement etc.). • Start gathering and organizing evidence.

TIPS cont’d • Attend all in-class workshops including: - Resumes & Cover Letters – week of February 3, 2014 - Skills Portfolio due for Tom McKaig Feb. 3RD and Thomas Manning Feb. 4th – late papers are not accepted. WITH RESPECTIVE PROF - Interview Quiz WEEK OF Feb 24 WITH RESPECTIVE PROFS. YOU MUST WRITE IN YOUR PROPER SECTION/DAY/TIME.

  21. TIPS cont’d • See your professor early to clarify any areas of confusion. • Visit Career Services for a one-to-one critique of your Resume & Cover letter.
