First meeting • Mar 2010: visit by 'critical friend' John Hostler (HEA Change Academy), identificaton of project remit • how can we make more effective use of IT in teaching and learning and the administration of learning? • what structures do we need to make good decisions? • how do we embed technology effectively in working practice?
Residential event • Apr 2010: 3-day residential event in Milton Keynes • a mixture of ice-breaking exercises, motivational talks, brain-storming sessions...
The problems • technology comes from a wide range of providers: • OUCS • IMSU (Hospitals) • MSD LTG • MSD WebTeam • Departments • there is limited coherence of services which causes a number of problems
The problems • staff do not always know who to ask for support with technology: the provider chosen may be simply the first person willing to do something, not necessarily the most appropriate • staff may not know what already exists or what it is possible to achieve with technology
The problems • related to these difficulties is the lack of a coherent Divisional vision for IT which causes problems with • prioritising Divisional IT resources • influencing the central University to address Divisional needs
The solution: JoinIT • a framework for better procurement and development of educational technology • JoinIT will not explicitly address IT needs within research, nor is it intended to reform the whole management of MSD IT • it is however hoped that the models that emerge will inform the process of procurement and development of IT more generally
JoinIT • stakeholders: • academic, IT and administrative staff • students • strategy: • acquire an overview of various IT providers • identify priorities for MSD • advise MSD and external bodies (ODIT, OUCS) on needs, funding • develop a project review process
Aims • to provide clarity for staff in resolving IT needs: join up providers to create a simplified ‘one stop shop interface’ • disseminate information • promote staff development by increasing understanding • gather the views of staff • encourage staff to come up with learning technology ideas and prioritise those ideas
Project review process • based on peer review process for manuscripts/grants where a member of a review board takes responsibility for a submission: • awareness of background priorities • awareness of available resources • overseeing the reports submitted by expert reviewers • simple template for proposals • stakeholder group to coordinate
Stakeholder group • the group will report to D-EPSC • it will include representation from • IT staff • MSDLT • MSD Web Team) • OUCS representative • Departmental IT representative • Academic and administrative staff • Undergraduate course • Clinical School • taught Masters course
Project review process • review proposals against criteria: • widely applicable/deployable • cannot be sourced elsewhere • viable • cost benefit • scaleable • of strategic importance • time versus complexity • non-IT alternative • compatibility with existing information
