  1. Eastern Europe SSWG6 d. Describe the various ethnic and religious groups in the region and the effect of geography on those groups and their major customs and traditions SSWG6c. Analyze the importance of Europe’s coastal location, climatic characteristics, and river systems regarding population, economic development, and world influence.

  2. Eastern Europe: A Cultural Crossroads • People moving between Europe and Asia have had to cross this region leaving behind their culture • Many Empires have controlled the parts of the region • Roman Empire • Byzantine Empire • Ottoman Empire • Austria-Hungary • Soviet Union

The 20th Century • Most ethnic groups in Eastern Europe wanted their own nation-states • This desire for independence sparked many wars in the Balkan region • WWI • WWII • Following WWII most Eastern Europe became satellite nations (nations dominated by another country) of the Soviet Union • After the fall of the USSR many ethnic groups gained their own nation-states

  4. Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia Yugoslavia included 6 republics, 4 of them voted to be independent but Serbia objected leading to civil war

Turmoil in the Balkans • 500s-Slavic people from Poland and Russia move to the Balkans • Called “South Slavs” (the Croats, Slovenes and Serbs) • 1300s-The Muslim Ottoman Empire conquers the region, causes religious differences • Islamic: Albania, Bosnia and Herz. • Christian: Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia

  6. 1929-Named Yugoslavia “Land of the South Slavs” • 1946-Yugoslavia organized into 6 republics (Bosnia & Herz, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia) • 1990-Serbia decided to create a Greater Serbia by expanding their borders • Slovenia and Croatia declare their independence and go to war with Serbia, Serbia looses

  7. 1992-Bosnia-Herz. Declares independence and goes to war with Serbia • Serbia uses ethnic cleansing to get rid of Bosnia’s Muslims and Croats • 200,000 + killed and 2 million fled their homes • Late 1990s-Serbia attacks the province of Kosovo using ethnic cleansing on its Albanian population • Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic was arrested on war crimes • 2002-Serbia and Montenegro created • 2006-Montenegro gains independence • 2007-Kosovo gains independence
