  3. All organisms need energy to grow. They get energy from food. • A fungus is a plant that doesn´t make its own food. • Yeast is a fungus. It needs sugar from dead plants to grow. • The sugar gives yeast the energy it needs to stay alive and grow. • People use yeast to make dough for bread and buns.

  4. OUR INVESTIGATION We wanted to see how yeast grows when we mix it with sugar, flour and water. • We took ¼ cup of warm water • 1 package of dry baker´s yeast • A glass jar • 1 cup of flour • 1 tablespoon of sugar • 1 spoon

  5. First we added the yeast to the warm water.

  6. Then we put the flour and sugar into the glass jar

  7. We had to stir the mixture until it made a sticky dough

  8. We pushed the dough down into the bottom of the jar, and we measured how high the dough was.

  9. We put the jar in a warm place and we waited for 45 minutes

  10. After that we saw that the dough had grown 5 centimeters

  11. We concluded that it is important to use yeast when we bake cakes or cookies
