  7. Brief History • Established in April 1999 by Sonny Masero • Two years funding from DETR/DTI Partners in Innovation • Now founded by private sponsors, grant funds and ongoing research • Averaged one event per month • Charitable status achieved in 2004 • 1,400+ members

  11. New Project Building the Market for Sustainable Lifestyles Defra Environmental Action Fund

The Needs • There is a credibility gap in the case for designing and building sustainable homes • This project aims to remove this gap by demonstrating that: • Sustainable homes need not cost more to build • Sustainable homes do facilitate sustainable consumption and production • Homeowners will pay a premium for sustainable residential developments

  13. Ideal Sustainable Lifestyle • Create communities where an individual can associate themselves with neighbours who are also living a sustainable lifestyle. • Design in measures to create domestic environments where sustainable lifestyle choices are the norm. • Provide information to residents to allow them to make “rational choices”.

  14. The Project • £200,000 over 3 years from April 2005 • 50% funded by Defra • Year 1: Gap analysis • Year 2: Targeted research • Year 3: Dissemination

  15. Year 1: Gap Analysis • August 2005: Appointed Upstream to undertake a review and gap analysis of present business case • Final report published next week • Review areas for further work • Consult members in the new year
