  2. Addition and Subtraction with Significant Figures • Any calculation can only be as accurate as the least accurate instrument. • In addition and subtraction problems, the answer must be rounded to same number of decimal places as the leastaccurate measurement in the problem.

  3. Addition and Subtraction Using Significant Figures • Add the following measurements and express the answer to the correct number of significant figures. • 16.345g + 14.4g + 11.29g = • 42.035g • Is this the correct way to express the answer? • NO!!! We are limited by our least accurate measurement. • 42.0g is correct.

  4. Addition and Subtraction Using Significant Figures • 24.5L – 14.032L = • 10.468L • Is this the correct way to express the answer? • No!!! Again, we are limited by the accuracy of the least accurate measurement. • 10.5L is correct.

  5. Multiplication and Division with Significant Figures • Any calculation can only be as accurate as the least accurate instrument. • Any product or quotient must be rounded to contain the same number of significant figures as the least accurate measurement in the problem.

  6. Multiplication and Division with Significant Figures • Calculate the area to the correct number of significant figures. • 11.34m x 1.25m = • 14.175m2 • Is this the correct way to express the answer?? • NO!!! Our answer is limited by the least accurate ruler. • 14.2m2 is correct.

  7. Multiplication and Division with Significant Figures • Calculate the density to the correct number of significant figures. • 5.325g/6.0L = • 0.8875g/L • Is this the correct way to express the result? • NO!!! We are always limited by the least accurate instrument. • 0.89g/L is correct.
