  1. The Challenge of Creating a Student Spirit Aneeta Madhok Member, Scientific Committee, Central Asia Region, Eduniversal. Cape Town October 2009

  2. Some unverified facts • One out of ten teachers is a star • All students have one teacher in their lives who made a difference to them • Its more about who you are, rather than what you say • The Mary Poppins experience (cheerful disposition, plays games, creates magic, involves the learners)

  3. What Has Changed? • Management and governance of B-schools • Teachers • Students • B-School curriculum • Sector Dynamics • Virtual times • Emergence of social media • Changing priorities of youth today • Globally diverse classroom • Political correctness

  4. Propositions For Discussion In Small Open Spaces • Students are the same, teachers need to change accordingly • Knowledge and theory is not important, practical skills and networking is • Exams, attendance, discipline is not important in today’s democratic context • Academic rigour is best because it raises the standard of learning for students • Going beyond the ‘packaged presentation’ disturbs the curriculum plans

  5. Brief for group activity • Take up the proposition for your group • Appoint one person the moderator-cum presenter • Debate the issues (both for and against the proposition) about 7 minutes. Do make sure that all in the group have time to speak and moderator captures all the points • Synthesize and come to agreement (about 5 minutes) • Capture the thoughts on the flip chart provided • Assign 2-3 minutes for presenter to give his/her thoughts

  6. In Conclusion • A session about challenges in creating a student spirit • A demonstration of a technique called Open Spaces that engages student spirit • Plenty of self-generated knowledge on how to engage the student spirit through the work of the small groups which debated six propositions and presented their own self-generated knowledge. • A building of perspective on challenges of creating student spirit
