Purpose of a mission statement • To outline a common set of goals and beliefs • Paints the “big picture” of why the organization exists • Gives employees and customers a sense that there are clear guiding principles
1. Arrange a meeting • No more than 50 employees from the organization • Customers? • Welcome and introduce the concept of a mission statement
2. Describe the purpose of a mission statement • To outline a common set of goals and beliefs for an organization
3. Share with them some mission statements • Particularly good • From organizations similar to yours
Disney mission statement • “We create happiness by providing the finest in entertainment for people of all ages, everywhere.”
Ritz-Carlton mission statement • “We are ladies and gentlemen, serving ladies and gentlemen.”
American Society for Training and Development mission statement • “We provide leadership to individuals, organizations, and society to achieve work-related competence, performance, and fulfillment.”
Point out the elements of a mission statement • What business the organization is really in • What service it really provides • Special approach to the marketplace • Strengths of the organization • What it wants to accomplish

5. Point out how mission statement examples use these elements
Disney mission statement • “We create happiness by providing the finest in entertainment for people of all ages, everywhere.” NOT • “We run theme parks and make movies and money.”
6. Invite people to consider what words or concepts come to mind • Look at the “forest” instead of the “trees” • Think of words that pop into your head • Jot down these words or phrases in large letters, each on a separate Post-it

7. Share these thoughts with the big group • Shout out words and hand to a volunteer • Attach to wall or onto a flip chyart • Keep thinking! • Think about natural categories taking shape
8. Start sorting • Look for synonyms and put them together • Suggest main categories or themes • Reattach the suggested words and phrases
9. Composing the actual statement • Ask group’s permission to proceed with writing the statement • Ask for 3-5 volunteers • Reveal the statement at another group meeting
Translating the Vision Into Action • List your “to-dos” • Rate them based on your mission: High Alignment, Medium Alignment, Low Alignment • Ignore the Low Alignment • Schedule the High and Medium Alignment
