  7. LZ Capabilities Comparison C-27J Min LZ 45’ X 2400’ C-130 Min LZ 60’ X 3000’ The minimum landing zone (LZ) length and width is determined by C-27J Concept of Operations Annex C. The C-27J has not been included in AFI 13-217, Drop Zone and Landing Zone Operations. The C-27J has short field capabilities that have not been tested or incorporated into these manuals. As such, the C-27J must follow the more restrictive C-130J guidelines. Right Size – Right Airframe

  9. UNCLASSIFIED C-27J vs C-23 C-23 Sherpa is unusable in Afghanistan due to:Runway Type, Runway Length, Runway Elevation $3,053 29 28 270 IAS $2,300 18 165 IAS 14 K 7.5 HR 3.5 HR 4 K 3 Right Size – Right Airframe
  10. UNCLASSIFIED C27J is Optimally Sized for Army Missions 46% 23% 18% C-27J C-130H C-130J
  11. Pallet Position Equivalent The US Air Force Air Mobility Division measures aircraft efficiency in the form of Pallet Position Equivalent (PPE) Currently there is no approved doctrine regarding the PPE of the C-27J Measurement is based using a standard 463L Pallet PPE measures efficiency by determining how full an aircraft is per sortie The PPE takes into account cargo and rolling stock, but does not specify passenger count All cargo or rolling stock must equate to a predetermined weight in order to be counted as a pallet position According to AMD, baggage is not considered unless palletized and weighed Due to its unique mission, the C-27J makes rare use of its center-isle seating (Greater Flexibility) 8 seats = 1 PPE (C-27J) versus 12 seats = 1 PPE (C-130) C-27J: 3 pallet maximum versusC-130J: 8 pallet maximum C-27J counts passenger occupancy (8 PAX = 1 PPE) Since FOC PPE C-27J = 1.4 (46% full) versusC-130 (23% full) versusC-130J (18% full)
  12. UNCLASSIFIED Aviation Fusion Small Airfields & LZs C-27J is not a replacement for CH-47s, but when used together they achieve a synergistic effect in both efficiency and cost for the warfighter HLZs HLZs Small Airfields & LZs Large Airfields Right Size – Right Airframe
  13. UNCLASSIFIED Cost Effective In these two examples alone, the C-27J relieved the CH-47 of 7.5 hours of blade time for a total savings of $69,900 Example 1: Romanian Relief In Place (RIP) Saved 4.5 hours of blade time for CH-47 ($37,605 direct savings). Delivered 150 PAX in one mission CH-47 scheduled 2 days for same movement Completed RIP and Re-fragged < 3hrs to transport VIPs to Kabul International Example 2: Relieved CH-47 of OATN mission delivering 24 tri-walls and 10 PAX. Saved 3 hours of CH-47 blade time ($32,295 direct savings) DoD FY12 O&M cost Right Cost – Right Time – Right Airframe
  14. UNCLASSIFIED Cost Indicated Air Speed Cost Per Hour Cargo Capacity (lbs) Comparing cargo loads, air speed and cost per hour, C-27J provides the most effective capability for the direct support/time sensitive missions.
  15. UNCLASSIFIED Current C-27J Metric EFFECTIVE FLEXIBLE COST EFFICENT Right Size – Right Time – Right Cost
  16. UNCLASSIFIED C-27J – Right Airframe Efficient Right Size 3 Pallet Position Equivalency = 46% Time sensitive Right Time 46% of Sorties changed inside 96 hrs (Since FOC) cost Right Cost $2,300 per Flight Hr
