What is it? • The National Book Award for Young People’s Literature is an award given yearly by the National Book Foundation. The foundation has been giving this award since 1996. The National Book Foundation gives their award and a $10,000 cash prize to an American Young Children’s Author who writes in a way that will expand their reading audience and enhance cultural values.
Award Criteria and Process • A panel of five authors, that also write Young Children’s Literature, decide who will win each year. The potential winners are nominated by publishers. The winner can come from any genre. The judges simply look for an American author who writes well and makes young people want to read.
