Global Health Ethical Issues Presentation Nanncie Constantin, RN, BSN Introduction : By definition, global health is a condition that refers to health issues that concern many countries, issues and concerns that transcend national boundaries, and are best addressed by cooperative action and solutions (Dickenson-Hazard, 2004). The global health issue that has been picked for this project is AIDS/HIV. Millions of people all over the world are currently living with these conditions which continue to have a devastating impact on the world. Groups and agencies that are working to resolve the issue: the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Broadway Cares/Equity fights Aids The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health AVERT: An international HIV/AIDS charity based in the United Kingdom dedicated to preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS worldwide. AVERT conducts educational campaigns in countries with high rates of infection, particularly South Africa and India. Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC): An alliance comprising over 200 international companies dedicated to combating HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria with private sector resources. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (The Global Fund): An international partnership of public and private organizations that finances programs to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. International AIDS Society (IAS): The world’s leading independent association of HIV/AIDS professionals World Health Organization (WHO): The WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for the health efforts of the United Nations system, responsible for providing leadership on global health issues. Groups that made things worse: With Aids and HIV being such a devastating problem in the world, there is no specific group or organization that works against improvements or which have made things worse in terms of resolving this issue around the world. Where is This issue occur in the world This issue occurs in many different parts of the world, but the highest percentage of patients with this disease live in Africa. According to a study done in 2009, it was estimated that 5.6 million people living with HIV and Aids are in South Africa, which is one of the higher number in any country in the world. Nigeria and India have the second largest HIV population, with more than 2 million people reported as being in this category (World Health Organization, 2009). It is estimated that there are 33.3 million people worldwide who are infected with HIV(World Health Organization, 2009). An aid in HIV is also increasing among people living in the United States where recent study shows more than 1 million people are living with the virus. -
