Ending World War II World War II Notes – Day 5
How about….. …a quick review!
A WAR ON TWO FRONTS! • Europe • Fighting against Hitler and Mussolini • Operation Overlord led by Dwight D. Eisenhower. • Started with D-Day!!! • General Patton takes North Africa and Italy • The Pacific • Fighting against Japan • Island hopping in the pacific region. • Phillippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa!!!! • Trying to get closer so they can bomb Japan!
Planning an Allied Strategy • Winston Churchill (Britain), FDR (U.S.), and Stalin (Russia) meet in Tehran, Iran in late 1943 to plan the rest of the war. • Stalin agrees to step up forces once the Allies invade France in 1944. • Roosevelt and Stalin agree to break up Germany after WWII is over. • Stalin promises to help the U.S. against Japan once Germany is defeated.
Germany is defeated…So the war is over right?? • Heck no! • Japan has no intentions of giving up the fight against the U.S. • So the fight continues…
Island Hopping in the Pacific • Reasons for Island Hopping… • Take the fight closer to Japan • Secure key bases in the Pacific region • Regain control of the Philippines
Douglas MacArthur • August 1942 – leads U.S. troops in Guadalcanal (island south of Philippines) • Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944 – largest naval battle in history • Japanese begin using kamikaze tactics (fly planes into U.S. ships)
Iwo Jima and Okinawa (1945) • U.S. needed to get closer to Japan to refuel bomber planes • So they take Iwo Jima • Firebombing with napalm kills many factories and civilians • U.S. needed to get even closer to prepare invasion of Japanese mainland • So they take Okinawa
Would you be willing to use kamikaze tactics for your country? • Yes • No
Japanese Surrender • U.S. decides not to invade Japan, instead drops two atomic bombs in August 1945. • Russians join war the same day second bomb is dropped. • August 15,1945 – V-J Day (Victory in Japan) • President Harry Truman’s decision is still questioned to this day.
Truman’s decision… Good Decision… Bad Decision… Japan was close to surrendering, couldn’t really hurt the U.S. Hundreds of thousands are instantly killed with bomb. Millions more may be exposed to radiation that causes cancer. • Japan was very resilient, wouldn’t have surrendered any time soon. • We might have saved a million U.S. lives by not invading mainland Japan. • The war ends immediately.
Was the dropping of the atomic bombs the correct thing to do? • Yes • No
