Induction • Where is stuff? • First ever lesson with the kids- Help! • What expectations should we give to the students? • Lessons on the system • Get them familiar with specifications: GCSE and BTEC
The Department • Make NQTs feel part of the team • Be positive around them • Encourage staff room time at lunch • Encourage the pub on a Friday
The Technicians • Show NQTs how the technicians like to receive their requisitions • Emphasise a positive relationship will be very beneficial! • Encourage trying out experiments first
Observations • Regrettably, these are extremely helpful • One a half term, from different members of staff • Be specific on how to improve- CONSTRUCTIVE
We would like to know… • The structure of the year • Key exams • Coursework dates • Expectations of marking • Staff responsibilities • Writing schemes of work • Data
The Mentor • Regular meetings, at least fortnightly • Be positive!!! We are very sensitive beings • Sometimes we just need to be told that we’re doing a good job • Help them identify weaknesses in teaching in order to build on them • Encourage cross-curricular observations of teachers • Choose the right person • Give some recommendations for filing of meeting minutes, student info etc. Get this set up at the start of the year
The HOD • Always on your side • Give expectations • Be involved- show an interest • NQTs will be keen- don’t overload them • Some responsibilities are nice because they can make NQTs feel important
