RootsTech 2012 Un-Conference Session Genealogical Society Webmasters Tony Hanson Webmaster
Agenda • Problem Statement • Discussion • Wrap up • Next Step(s)?
Problem Statement • Much (most?) of todays genealogical research is performed on-line • It is increasingly important for societies to have an on-line presence • Membership in many (most?) traditional, local genealogical societies is declining • The amount of knowledge required to develop and maintain a web site is increasing… and getting hard to find in member volunteers
My Goal Establish a way for those of us involved in creating and supporting the on-line presence of genealogical societies to: • Communicate • Collaborate • Cooperate
What would we talk about? A few suggested topics….
Social Media Blogs, Wiki’s, Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs, Google + and others • Can I/Should I integrate any or all of these into my societies on-line presence? • Why or Why Not? • How?
Content Management Systems (CMS) • Survey to see what others are using? • It would be nice to be able to discuss issues with others using my CMS • For a society considering using a CMS it would be nice to hear some real-world feedback from others who are actually using a CMS under consideration?
Security Issues • For too many of us, security is (or will be) a major concern only after ‘something bad’ has already occurred. • There are many ‘generic’ things that can (and should) be done to improve the security of your web site • Security topics specific to your __________(hosting service, CMS, Blog/Wiki/whatever)
Hosting Services • What to consider when selecting a provider • Share strengths and weaknesses of the provider we are using
Backups • How to perform them • How often • Off-site archiving strategy
Utilization Measurement • Google Analytics • A free service that allows you to track and measure access to your web site • It is easy to set up but it has a lot of features • OmnitureSiteCatalyst • Session at 9:45 on Saturday
Pay Wall • Should we or shouldn’t we? • What kind of things are others charging for? • What financial model is best? • How can/should it be implemented?
Making Local Data Discoverable and Accessible Globally • Many societies have created databases for local records of interest • What do we need to do to make them discoverable to Family Search, Ancestry and other genealogical search tools?
Application sharing • Establish a repository of software • Society Membership/Renewal • Event Registration/Management • Surname Registration • Cemetery Inventory/Search
Cooperative software development/maintenance Why not work together to create, maintain and enhance tools and applications of mutual interest?
How Can We Help Each Other? • Twitter • #GenSocWM • Wiki • Family Search: • Genealogical Society Webmasters – RootsTech 2012 Unconference • Blog • Forum • ??????
