2. היכן קבור הצדיק ממארוס?The holy tomb in Maros • ב1978 שהה צבי אילן עם משפחתו באנגליה. • הוא חקר תעודות של הגניזה הקהירית השמורות בקמברידג'. • ברשימה שמתארת מסלול של עולה רגל לקברי הצדיקים בא"י הוזכר הכפר מארוס. • מיהו הצדיק ממארוס? שמו לא ברור בתעודה. • In 1977 Zvi Ilan studied manuscripts of the Cairo Genizah written in the 14-th century . • One of them was a list of pilgrimage sites in the Holy Land . • It included a site named Maros.

Zvi Ilan and Joseph Stefansky surveyed the ruins of an Arab village named Maros, 4 km west of Tel Hazor. After a long search they found the heads of 2 columns peeping out of the ground under the bushes.

15. קופת הקהילהThe Synagogue Treasury "בצד אולם התפילה מצאנו את מחסן בית הכנסת ובו נרות מחרס וזכוכית. העמקנו לחפור מתחת לרצפה. בפינת המחסן נמצא בור מעוגל חצוב בסלע. בדופן הבור נמצא כוך חצוב עמוק יותר ובו נתגלתה לנו קופת הקהילה." “In a storeroom beside the prayer hall we found pottery and glass lamps. In the floor was a stone with a hole which rested above a hollow carved in a rock. A sloping path hewn in the rock led to a niche – the community treasury”

25. בית המדרשThe Beth Midrash - The Study hall "מדרום לבניין בית-הכנסת הייתה חצר שהתמלאה סחף במשך דורות. רמזים שונים גרמו לנו לקוות לגילוי דברים מיוחדים. העבודה היתה קשה וממושכת, אך התוצאות הצדיקו את המאמץ בצורה נפלאה. התברר שבמאה ה-7 הוקם בחצר מבנה עצמאי. צורתו ופרטיו מראים שהיה זה בית מדרש עתיק הראשון שהתגלה עד כה."

30. מתי ולמה חרבה מרות ?When and why Meroth was abandoned? • במרות היתה קהילה יהודית כפרית במשך כ-1000 שנים. • המטבע האחרון בקופה הוא מ-1193. • שנים אחדות לפני מועד זה הובסו הצלבנים ע"י סלח-אדין בקרני חיטים. • יתכן שבתקופה בלתי יציבה זו הותקפה מרות ותושביה נמלטו בבהילות. • A prosperous Jewish community lived in Meroth for more than a 1000 years. • The last coin in the treasury is from 1193 AC Six years after the defeat of the Crusaders at the Horns-of-Hittin battle. Apparently the people of Meroth had to flee during the ensuing unstable period, abandoning most of the treasury.

32. מצב האתר ב2008The Site status ( 2008 ) • העתקים של שני הפסיפסים נעשו ע"י תלמידים מחצור הגליליתבהדרכת המורה לאמנות טובה נוה, ונמצאים באתרם. • האתר נמצא בשטח אימונים של צה"ל. • דרך עפר שיוצאת ממרגלות תל-חצור ועבירה לרכב שטח מובילה לאתר. • חברי ה"סדנה של בתי הכנסת" של מכון אבשלום מנכשים את העשבים ומרססים נגד נביטה. צובעים ומנקים את שלטי ההסבר. The excavation site includes copies of the 2 mosaics with guideposts. It is situated within an Army training zone. One can obtain a permission from the Army authorities to visit there on Fridays, Saturdays or Holidays only. The dirt road to Meroth, 4 km west of Tel Hazor, starting off Route 90, is passable to 4x4 vehicles only.

In the 18 years since Zvi Ilan passed away, his students kept Meroth in good condition. Now they are growing old, and some of them have already passed away too. Without their loving care Meroth’s condition will soon deteriorate, unless superseded by new volunteers!!
