  2. Changing Workforce Programme Supporting the NHS to: • Redesign roles by combining tasks differently. • Expanding roles or moving tasks up or down a traditional uni-disciplinary ladder

  3. Workforce issues for NHS: • Reduced number of entrants to healthcare • Large number of healthcare leavers • Inflexible professional boundaries • Clinical ceiling • Need for legislative change

  4. Patient Expectations: • Good quality care • Fewer “faces” and hand-offs • Enough people to give care • People with time All of which comes from energised, well-motivated staff

  5. What do Patients Need? • Appropriate treatment • Rapid access • Less waiting • Less duplication

  6. Staff Needs: • Respect and self-esteem • Job enrichment/personal growth • Desire for variety • Less constraints Without which there is wastage and loss of flexibility

  7. OUR CURRENT WORK INVOLVES PILOT SITES: • Currently 13 CWP pilot sites throughout the UK are fully testing the potential for different ways of working as a means of improving patient services

  8. Emergency Care Pilot Based in Coventry and Warwickshire involving: • Primary Care • Pre-Hospital Care • Three Acute Hospital Trusts

  9. Two Distinct Parts to Pilot: • Development of the Emergency Care Practitioner role • Development of other roles, identified from process mapping / CWP Toolkit Workshopsetc.

  10. Process Map Mark is 14, he lives in Hillcrest in Warwickshire. At 1600 one Saturday he lacerated his left leg while playing football. The laceration is superficial and 10cm in length. His parents and an ambulance are called at 1605.

  11. Emergency Care Practitioners • 3 Paramedics to access nursing courses • 3 A&E Nurses to access paramedic course • All students to then access degree level practitioner course • This testing will highlight the skills & competencies needed by the Emergency Care Practitioner

  12. Patients will be treated at scene. Reduced queues in A&E etc. Fewer faces more continuity Smoother progression through system Increased job satisfaction Increased career opportunities Improved clinical skills Autonomous practice in different settings Better for Patients / Better for staff

Induction & Clinical Orientation Emergency Nursing Care IHCD Paramedic Award Emergency Driving SHARED Care and management of minor illness Principles/concepts of autonomous practice Emergency care practice Care and management of minor injuries Diploma in Autonomous Practice Research methods & statistics Optional Module BSc in Emergency Care Practice * Dissertation “Top up” module to Honours Degree (dependant on progress of students & employer negotiations) * Subject to validation

  16. Looking to the future • Development of pre-registration degree (with dual registration) • Development of post-registration certificate/diploma programmes • Other new/expanded roles: • Community Paramedic • Investigations/Diagnostics • Alternative Response Vehicle
