  2. Duroc • Durocs are a solid red color, with no white on their body. • The color may range from a very light golden to a very dark red. • Medium length body and a slightly dished face. • The ears droop over the eyes and should not be held erect. • Good meat-type hog.

  3. Hampshire • Body is black with a broad white “belt” that encircles the shoulders, including the front legs and front feet. • The body is medium length. • The ears are erect, not covering the eyes. • Heavily muscled, lean meat breed.

  4. Poland China • Black body with six white “points”—the feet, nose, and tail. • The ears are drooped. • Originally considered a lard-type hog, but recent selection efforts have resulted in the breed conforming more to a meat-type hog.

  5. Spotted Swine (or Spots) • Traced to the Poland China. • The breed was largely developed in Ohio and Indiana. • It has a spotted body and is usually predominantly black and the ears are drooped. • The breed is fast-gaining and feed efficient.

  6. Chester White • The Chester White has an all-white body with drooping ears. • The sows have good mothering ability, durability, and soundness.

  7. Yorkshire • The Yorkshire has a white body with erect ears. • The goal is to be a source of durable mother lines that can contribute to longevity and carcass merit. • The breed motto is, “The mother breed and a whole lot more.”

  8. Berkshire • Black body with six white points (the feet, face, and tail); may also have splashes of white on the body. • The ears are erect. • An old breed with traits of fast and efficient growth, reproductive efficiency, and meatiness. • At one time, it was a popular lard breed.

  9. Landrace • The Landrace is all white in color, with an extremely long body. • The ears are large and drooping. • The sows are prolific and satisfactory mothers. • Noted for their milk producing abilities.

  10. Pietrain • This breed is white with black spots. • The ears are erect. • The Pietrain is of medium size, but it is extremely heavily muscled. • It is known for carrying a high proportion of lean to fat.

  11. Hereford • First developed in the 1920s and is now considered to be rare. • The breed’s markings are similar to the Hereford breed of cattle. • Red with white on the face and feet; no more than one-third white on the body overall. • The ears are drooping. • The Hereford is of medium size.

  12. Black Exotic • This breed is a Hampshire-Pietrain cross. • The added heterosis from being crossed with the Pietrain greatly increases the amount of muscle mass that these hogs possess.
