Newtonian Synthesis Background • Newton discovered gravitation to be present everywhere on Earth • Falling apple story is false, but he did correlate falling objects to the moon falling around the Earth a.he noticed the moon circled the Earth b. he knew circular motion required a force c. he named the force gravity!

Newtonian Synthesis Background (cont.) • He stated that if the apple is attracted to the Earth, then the Earth must be attracted to the apple (3rd Law of Motion) • Using his laws and a few theories, Newton stated this would work for any two objects in the universe and therefore stated gravitation is universal
