Data Analysis • Why do you participate in the class? • 56% of the class said that they are taking the class for ‘weight-loss’ purposes, while another 24% said they are participating ‘To get in shape’. • How would you rate your workout? • 48% of the class said the workout was ‘Just about right’ while another 32% said the workout was ‘challenging’ to them. • Why do you participate in the class? • How would you rate your workout? Data Analysis • If this class was available more often each week, would you participate? • Out of 25 participants, 22 said (or 88%) that they would participate more often if this class was available more throughout the week. • On average, how often do you participate per month? • 48% showed that they participate in ‘5-6 classes’ each month which would be more than 1 per week. Another 36% took ‘7+ classes’ within a months length which indicates that 84% of the class is highly active in class participation. • If this class was available more often each week, would you participate • On average, how often do you participate per month? Data Analysis Open Ended Queations • How did you hear about this class? • The majority of responses showed that they heard through friends who are already part of Island or through advertisements. • What is your favorite part of the class? • Working out with friends, losing weight and feeling better about themselves after the workout. The instructor makes the BodyPump class enjoyable but at the same time makes them work hard. • Do you feel participating in the exercise/fitness classes has benefitted your overall health and fitness? Why? • Majority of responses said that they do feel benefits. If it weren’t for the classes many of the participants work not workout as efficiently as they do in the class. The classes are a motivation and they feel more healthy. • What improvements would you recommend to making this class better? • Most respondents said that if the class was held more often during the week, or at other times during the day instead of just late mornings. Other than that, a majority said that the class is just fine how it is. • Data Analysis Open Ended Queations • Do you feel that you get the value of your membership through these classes? • Those who answered ‘yes’ to this question said that they feel they get the value of their membership through taking classes. Those who answered yes to this question were the ones who participated in 5-6 classes and 7+ classes each month. They take advantage of their gym membership. • What is your opinion of the overall quality and knowledge of the fitness instructors? • The instructor was Emillie. Many of the participants said that they thought she was just right for the BodyPump class. She would push them to their limits and make them work hard. Emillie had positive feedback from all participants showing her knowledge and quality to instruct this fitness class. • What changes can be made to Island Health & Fitness and the group exercise classes to benefit the overall health of the community, if any? • Few answered this question. Responses included advertise more often, get the community involved as much as possible and to keep doing what they already do.
Data Analysis • Island Health & Fitness Facility Qualities- 67% of the instructors believed that Island Health and Fitness ‘always’ provided adequate well maintained work space. All of all the instructors believed that Island Health and Fitness met the needs of the KidFit Participants. About 67% of all the instructors were satisfied with the quality and variety of indoor and outdoor activities available. • KidFitAccording to all the instructors they are proud of the success of KidFit and believe it ‘always’ achieves the goals of the KidFit Program and its participants. Nearly, 67% of the instructors believe that two sessions of KidFit per week is enough for the kids ‘sometimes’. Only about 33% believe that KidFit is ‘always’ advertised to the community sufficiently, others believe it is ‘most of the time’ and ‘sometimes’. Perception of Parental Involvement- • Data Analysis • Perception of Parental Involvement-Participants believe that parents are activity involved with KidFit ‘always’, ‘most of the time’, and ‘sometimes’. Two of the three instructors believe parents ‘always’ care about their kids achievements. • Island Health & Fitness Environment- All three instructors agreed that there is ‘always’ a welcoming environment for KidFit Participants. Two said they are ‘always’ satisfied with the equipment that is available. • Instructor Qualities- All Participants believed the instructors provided help and encouragement, were willing to provide individual help, demonstrated respect towards participants, and were knowledgeable about planning activities and exercise for KidFit. Two said kid participants were involved in planning activities ‘most of the time’. Two said kid Participant’s always respected their instructor. All three said kid Participant’s attendance was not a problem ‘most of the time’. KidFit Focus Group • Data Analysis • In our focus group with the KidFit there were four participants named James, Jason, Quinn and Austin. Their ages ranged from 10-14 and their involvement with the program ranged 2 months for Jason, 3 months for Austin, 5 months for James and Quinn with almost 4 years. The focus group lasted roughly twenty minutes and was semi-structured where we asked the participants questions but allowed for follow-up questions and other questions relative to the topic. Based on the responses from our focus group with KidFit, three main themes were created: Physical Health, Dieting, and Social and Emotional influence. In each of these themes, subtopics or categories were created from common responses that the participants provided during the focus group. • Data Analysis (cont’d) • Our first question to the participants after introductions was what motivated them to participate in the KidFit program. The responses from this question were mainly a social influence from professional and family support about concern with their individual health. James and Austin were both recommended by their nutritionist and doctor because they felt it would help them because they were overweight. Jason’s sister recommended it to him since she previously was involved in the program, she thought Jason would benefit from it and he also added so he could beat kids up in school. With Jason’s response, you can see how emotional influence has an impact on students where he not only joined the program because of his sister but for possibly bullying as well. • Another social influence that the participants responded to was in regards to what could make the program better. There was a general consensus that all of the boys liked when Matt and Dusty ran the program on Thursdays instead of Audra on Tuesdays because they felt Matt and Dusty pushed them harder and gave them harder workouts. Austin said, ‘likes Matt and Dusty better because they push him to his limits and sometimes even past it,’ and Quinn replied with the more intense workouts they provide to keep him focused. Based on the participants’ responses, they like then overall support that Matt and Dusty provide them where they are able to encourage and push them past their limits. Data Analysis • There were many questions where the students responses were generated around their physical health. When they were asked how has KidFit helped your overall fitness, many of the responses were they felt it has improved their strength, their cardio, and ability to work harder whenever they work. Austin even replied with, ‘when I punch my friends now they say ow every time compared to how weak he did it before KidFit.’ When the boys were asked what their favorite part about KidFit was they also replied with responses about their overall physical health. James, Austin and Jason all responded by saying they like working out their biceps and triceps as well as other muscle groups and strength exercises but those are their favorites. Quinn on the other hand said he likes really intensive workouts where he can be pushed to extreme limits. Lastly, we ask where they would be without the program and their goals; Jason, James and Austin’s goals were common among one another where they wanted to lose weight and gain muscle. They also all saw themselves not working out and playing more video games. Quinn on the other hand said he would be less active and less physically competent and his goal was to continue on a more progressively intense program. • When reading the responses it is clear that all of the participants want to lose weight and become healthier through increased strength and cardio but Quinn’s knowledge and responses seemed to be more realistic. This goes to show that even though these kids are overweight and want to lose weight, their main focus was on their biceps, triceps and strength where someone like Quinn actually understands physical exercise and how to lose weight, perform cardio, etc to reach his goal. • Data Analysis • Dieting was a common theme among the participants but also where the least attention was focused on. Dieting was brought up when the boys were asked what important changes have you made in your life while being a part of the KidFit program. All of the boys except Quinn stated they have made eating changes. James said when he is tempted with fastfood he says no and eats more vegetables. Austin had a similar response where he eats less steak and tries to eat more vegetables and white meat because of his high cholesterol. A very important part of becoming fit and changing your overall health is dieting and healthy eating. Quinn said in the past there has been a nutritionist that they see but the last few month the other three boys have not met her. • Conclusion • When analyzing all of the data collected we found that KidFit is an effective program but there are many needs for improvement. When comparing what the participants said to the instructors, the instructors feel they are always providing the best equipment for the participants and they always fulfill their goals and the programs goals. The participants on the other hand state that the program could be slightly more strict, trained more past their limits, and perhaps more people saying, ‘the more the better.’ • The KidFit program is a great way for children to learn about exercise, fitness and becoming an overall healthier person but with a maximum of 7 kids for 6 months in the program does not seem to be very effective since there are roughly 8 elementary schools in the Ithaca area. In order for this program to be more effective based on initial analyzing of the data, more opportunities for community involvement should be implemented. KidFit Data-Analysis Dieting Physical Health
