Leadership: Sad Facts and Silver Linings Author: Thomas J. Peters Presented by Ricardo Cardoso Filho
Outline • Sad Fact 1 - Not Enough Choices • Sad Fact 2 - Not Enough Time • Sad Fact 3 - Too Many Filters • Sad Fact 4 - Too Much Inertia
#1-Not Enough Choices • Managers get only one option. Silver Lining • There are many options if the managers search for the problems before.
#2-Not Enough Time • Time is fragmented, issues arrive late. Silver Lining • Each fragment can be used to signal leader’s preferences and set directions.
#3-Too Many Filters • Bad news is normally hidden. Silver Lining • Leaders can use their responses to good news to reinforce the organization’s values and priorities.
#4-Too Much Inertia • Major changes take months or years to emerge. Silver Lining • Over time, consistent choices accumulate into a consensus that requires minimal corrections.
Conclusion • Anticipate the problems, so you can have many alternatives to solve them. • Break your decision into smaller pieces and you will have more time to think about each one. • Be close to your team so you will avoid that bad news arrives too late. • Do not avoid or delay small changes, because after it will be harder to fix when they become larger problems.
Thank you… • Come to Brazil… for the World Cup in Soccer… • I guarantee you will have a good time!!!!
