Early Influences • Began playing harmonica at the age of 13; 4 years later he took up the guitar • Major influences were Son House and Robert Johnson • Style was classified as Delta Blues • Characterized by bottleneck style and the jagged, pulsating rhythms • Lyrics were dark, harsh, expressive, told of real life • Singers sang in a pain-filled manner
Transitioning • Moved to Chicago in 1943 • Worked as a truck driver while trying to make it as a musician • His song “I can’t be satisfied” launched the Chicago blues scene
