Classroom teacher 10th grade team leader Transition Committee member High School Transition Curriculum creator Like you, I have many hats Implementing Career Exploration and Planning will be Easier with some Hats than others
Classroom teacher The easy place to implement career exploration and planningis my classroom • Schedule days in library to use Career Zone & create a career plan • Point out social studies skills that are transferable – as we learn them • Build a relationship with my students by knowing their career plan
High School Transition Curriculum creator Another easy implementation is ‘Transition’ curriculum • Sell what we already do at ‘New Teacher’ orientation with new facts from DOL1 • Update materials • add what is missing • Have students put materials in a portfolio • Store them somewhere (this seems like a monumental undertaking – I have to reach out to guidance to see what is already being done) • Links for websites
1One way to ‘sell it’ • Ask teachers to imagine a student they had in the past who: • Has a strong idea of what they want to be when they grow up’ and • Has a realistic idea of how to reach that goal • How does he/she compare with other students in terms of: • Preparation for class • Behavior • achievement
10th grade team leader Implementing in my 10th Grade ‘Team’ road blocks1. other teachers have to agree2. we are already very busy ‘aha’ moment here . . . • What we already do: • Convene team meetings for students who are having academic, attendance or behavior problems • How its working: • Meetings are time consuming & ineffective
10th grade team leader What we could do: • For each struggler • Have them create a career plan during a team meeting or with their guidance counselor • Make sure all team teachers know their plan (relationship building) • connect the skills from their studies to the plan (keeping it real & connecting to their lives) • Action Plan Step One: discuss with my teammates in September
Transition Committee member Dream implementation • Get things going at different grade levels • Action plan step one: Get on agenda of committee meeting in September • Middle school license for “The Real Game” • Online career folders beginning in 7th or 8th • Get the idea out in the elementary schools that this is when career dreams are happening & students need more exposure to diverse fields
