Jigsaw Activity Expert Groups Read Different Literary Selections
Expert Groupswill read the following excerpted selections: • Group A: R.Rodriguez, Hunger of memory • Group B: Anti Jalava, Nobody could see I was a Finn • Group C: L. Rodriquez, Always running. La Vida Loca: Gang days in L. A. • Group D: M. Hong Kingston, The woman warrior • Contact erdman@uwosh.edu for specific information. Title the email expert groups.
Learn your own culture and the cultures of your students.This is a global issue.
As you read your selection, focus on the following questions: • How does the main character feel about her/his home language and culture? Pay attention to the process. • How does society (teachers, school, others) feel about the main character’s L1 and C1? • What were the costs of this process (schooling, language, education, family, etc)? L1 = first or home language C1 = first or home culture
