Malawi • Population: 15.3 million (UN, 2009) • Capital: Lilongwe • Area: 118,484 sq km (45,747 sq miles) • Major languages: English, Chichewa (both official) • Major religions: Christianity, Islam • Life expectancy: 37 years • Main exports: Tobacco, tea, sugar, cotton • GNI per capita: US $290 (World Bank, 2008) • Estimated 4th – 10th poorest country in the world

  5. Lilongwe • Lilongwe has an estimated 3 million people • 1.2 million of which are orphans (AIDS) • Many without parents • Many children acting as head of house.. What does this mean? • 250 people diagnosed with HIV/day • KV - Home to 17, 000 people

  7. How do we help?What can you do? • Help make the country more “self-sustainable” • Get and stay educated about the world around you • Donations • Equipment is good • Money is better 

  8. 5 Reasons why money is better than Equipment • 1 – There are no overhead costs 100% of money goes to the children (CIDA) • 2 – The needs of the children are not yet certain • 3 – It costs to ship equipment • 4 – Buying when I arrive will support local businesses • 5 – Malawian mail is not like Canadian mail
