Malawi –Biotech Regulation Status • Ratified Cartagena Protocol in 2009 • Biosafety Act in 2002 • Biosafety Regulations 2007 • National Biotechnology and Biosafety Policy 2008 • Policy is coordinated by the National Commission for Science and Technology • Legal framework under Ministry of Environment and Climate Change • Challenges: • Establishing biosafety registrars office • Raise awareness of Agriculture, breeders and others on benefits

  3. Malawi – Crop Potential • CFT of Bt Cotton underway • Interest in: • Cassava • Cowpea • Maize • Soybean ? 

  4. Malawi – AfricaBio Plan • Facilitate the Bt Cotton CFT communication training for Bunda College field staff • Product key messages • Communication guide targeted for different audiences • Develop product-specific materials to support CFT • FAQ & flyer: Bt cotton/ CFT • Issue management – Product impact • Set up information sharing platform (password protected) for key players • Identify and train key champions – i.e. Farmers Union President Felix Jumbe • CFT field visits for Farmers Union • CFT field visits for key/select cotton farmers

Malawi – AfricaBio Plan • Assist with formation of Malawi Biotech & Biosafety Consortium • Biosafety communications training • NBRC, IBC, etc., • Collaboration with PBS & ISAAA • Materials development • Bt cotton approval process • Support & facilitate CFT monitoring/audit training • In partnership with SA-DAFF Inspectorate Division • ABNE event – availability of funds? • Facilitate the sharing & exchange of information & expertise with SA regulators

  8. Malawi – ISAAA PlanKnowledge sharing Launch of the ISAAA global report:2012 Translation of the ISAAA report in 2 local languages(Chichewa&Chitumbuka) for wide use (radio and local media) Involvement of relevant stakeholders in the Burkina Faso study tour

  9. Malawi – ISAAAScience Communication Principles of Science communication (Biotech And Biosafety) for journalists Bisafety communication for scientists (If funds allow)

  10. Malawi – AFSTA Sensitize seed companies on the role of biotechnology with reference to their participation in on the CFT at Bunda to get their buy in. Have a workshop to sensitize the seed traders on the above. Carry out a follow up meeting to sensitize seed traders on biotechnology initiatives. Mobilise seed traders to form an active forum to continuously engage with scientists on biotechnology development.
