Interpret & compute quotients of fractions, & solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions Learning Target: I can simplify fractions by dividing numbers into the numerator and denominator that follow the divisibility rules. Essential Question: How to simplify fractions by finding the GCF and using divisibility rules?
Definitions: • Numerator: The number that is in the top of the fraction • Denominator: the number that is in the bottom of the fraction • Equivalent fractions: Fractions that represent the same value • Simplest form: when the numerator and the denominator have no common factors other than 1.
Simplifying Fractions • When you are simplifying fractions, you are writing fractions in their simplest terms. When the numerator and the denominator share no common factors, then a fraction is in its simplest terms. • If the numerator is a “1”, the fraction is in its simplest terms. • 1 1 1 1 2 3 21 12
Other fractions may be in their simplest terms, even if their numerator is NOT a 1. • 3 5 9 4 5 9 14 11 If a fraction is not in its simplest terms, it is easy to fix! Just divide the numerator AND the denominator by the common factors (or by the greatest common factor) until they have no more common factors.
Steps for Reducing Fractions: • See if there is a common factor for both the numerator and denominator • If a common factor is found then divide it in the numerator and the denominator to get the reduce fraction • 4/12 = 1/3 This equation was divided by four .
