  1. SIT…WALK…STAND THE EPHESIAN EXERCISE

  2. EPHESIANS - AN OUTLINE The believer’s • Position: SIT (1:1 – 3:21). Key verse 2:6. • Practice: WALK (4:1 – 6:9). Key verse 4:1. • Protection: STAND (6:10-24). Key verse 6:14.

  3. THE BELIEVER’S POSITION • Seated with Christ in the heavenlies, and blessed with all spiritual blessings in Him. 2:6;1:3. • To appreciate our position, we need to know what our previous state was. • Paul describes it in 2:1-3.

  4. EPHESIANS 2:1-3 And you .. were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

  5. WE WERE DEAD • In trespasses and sins. • Trespass (paraptwma) is a false step, a deviation from the right path. • Sin (aJmartia) is a missing of the mark.

  6. WE WERE DISOBEDIENT • Walked according to the course (aijwn, aeon or age) of this world. • Walked according to the Devil. • Walked in the lusts of our flesh.

  7. WE WERE DEPRAVED • We were fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind. • Outside was the prevailing secular culture. • Inside was our fallen nature. • Both controlled by the Devil.

  8. WE WERE DOOMED • The children of wrath. • God’s wrath is not bad temper. Never arbitrary. • It is the divine reaction to only one situation: evil. • We were on our way to eternal death.

  9. OUR FORMER STATE • Dead • Disobedient • Depraved • Doomed

  10. GOD THE FATHER’S WORK • Chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world (1:4). • Predestined us to adoption as sons (1:5). • Redeemed us through Christ's blood (1:7).

  11. GOD THE FATHER’S WORK (Contd.) • Made us alive (2:5). • Raised us up (2:6). • Made us sit in the heavenlies (2:6). • In all three events we are united with Christ.

  12. OUR UNION WITH CHRIST • Paul coins three compound verbs. • We were • Made alive together with Christ (sunezwopoihsen). • Raised together with Christ (sunhgeiren). • Seated in the heavenlies with Christ (sunekaqisen).

  13. GOD THE FATHER’S WORK (Contd.) • The mystery of the Church (3:3-6). • Put us into this fellowship (3:9; 2:19, 20). • The full display of his riches in the age to come (1:7; 3:11).

  14. GOD THE SON’S WORK • Redemption through His blood (1:7). • The forgiveness of sins (1:7). • All things to be gathered together in Him (1:10). • Inheritance in Him (1:11).

  15. GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT’S WORK • Sealed us (1:13; 4:30). • Gives us access to the Father (2:18). • Strengthens us (3:16). • The earnest of our inheritance (1:14).

  16. HISTORY OF THE NATURAL MAN PHYSICAL DEATH BIRTH SPIRITUAL DEATH SECOND (ETERNAL) DEATH

  17. HISTORY OF THE SPIRITUAL MAN PHYSICAL DEATH BIRTH SALVATION SPIRITUALDEATH ETERNAL LIFE

  18. THE PURPOSE OF GOD’S WORK IN US • The praise of His glory • 1:6 • 1:12 • 1:14

  19. A PRAYER FOR REVELATION(EPH. 1:15-23) • The hope of His calling (1:18): The Past. • The riches of inheritance (1:18): The Future. • The exceeding greatness of His power (1:19): The Present

  20. PAUL’S MAGNIFICENT DOXOLOGY (3:20,21) Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think ….

  21. THE BELIEVER’S PRACTICE: “WALK” • In chapter 4 Paul turns from exposition to exhortation. • From what God has done for us (doctrine) to what we must be and do (duty). • The key word is ‘walk’ 4:1, 17; 5:2,8,15.

  22. THE BELIEVER’S WALK WORDS WALK WITNESS WORKS

  23. WORKS OF THE BELIEVER • Ordained by God. 2:10. • The order is important: we were “created in Christ Jesus untogood works.” • We work not for salvation but from salvation.

  24. WALK SHOULD REFLECT WORTH • “Walk worthy of the vocation to which you are called” 4:1. • Walk is based on our worth in Christ. • Reflected in our character and conduct. 4:2.

  25. CHARACTERISTICS OF OUR WALK (4:2) • Lowliness • Meekness • Longsuffering • Love • Unity • Peace

  26. Actually Paul is describing some of the “fruit of the Spirit” (Gal. 5:22-23). • The “unity of the Spirit” (Eph. 4:3) is the result of the believer’s “walking in the Spirit”.

  27. THE UNITY OF BELIEVERS ARISES FROM THE UNITY OF OUR GOD (4:4-6) • One Spirit  one body. • One Lord  one faith, one baptism. • One God  in all.

  28. THE UNITY OF SPIRIT IS ENRICHED BY THE DIVERSITY OF OUR GIFTS (4:7-12) • The Giver of gifts is the ascended Christ. 4:7-10. • It is a mistake to think of “charismata” as exclusively the “gifts of the Spirit”. • In Romans 12, they are the gifts of the Father.

  29. SPIRITUAL GIFTS EXTREMELY VARIED • “Now there are varieties of gifts.” 1 Cor. 12:4. • There are no exhaustive catalogues of spiritual gifts in the Bible. • In 4:11, Paul selects only five for mention: Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and teachers.

  30. THE PURPOSE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS IS SERVICE (4:12) • For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry (diakonia). • For the edifying of the body of Christ.

  31. UNITY IS FOR MATURITY (4:13-16) • …till we all come to the ... measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; • …may grow up in all things into Him who is the head -- Christ.

  32. WALK AS A NEW MAN IN CHRIST (4:17-29) • Walk not as the Gentiles do (v. 17) • Put off the old man (v. 22) • Put on the new man (v. 24)

  33. WALK IMITATING OUR FATHER (5:1-17) • ‘Followers’ (5:1) is literally ‘imitators’ (mimhtai) • God is love  walk in love (5:1-2). • God is light  walk as children of light (5:3-14). • God is truth  walk in wisdom (5:15-17).

  34. WALK AS SPIRIT-FILLED BELIEVERS (5:18 – 6:9) • The fullness of the Holy Spirit. 5:18-21. • The passage consists of two imperatives (“do not be drunk … be filled”) followed by four present participles: speaking, singing, thanking, submitting.

  35. “BE FILLED” MEANS “BE CONTROLLED” • A person who is drunk is “under the influence of alcohol”. • A Spirit-filled believer is under the influence and power of the Holy Spirit. • A command (present imperative). Contrast baptism, sealing, anointing which are all past realities.

  36. THE RESULTS OF BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT • All are present participles. • Fellowship (speaking to one another in psalms & hymns). • Worship (singing & making melody). • Gratitude (thanking God). • Submission (to one another in the fear of God).

  37. THE WORDS OF THE BELIEVER(NEGATIVE) • No corrupt communication (logo~ sapro~). 4:29. • No evil speaking.(blasfemia). 4:31. • No foolish talking (mwrologia) or jesting(eujtrapelia). 5:4. • No vain words(kenoi logoi). 5:6.

  38. THE WORDS OF THE BELIEVER (POSITIVE) • Speaking the truth in love. 4:15. • Good, edifying, graceful words. 4:29b. • Words of gratitude. 5:4b. • Speaking in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. 5:19.

  39. THE PROTECTION OF THE BELIEVER: “STAND” (6:10-20) • Christian life is not a playground: it is a battlefield. • We face three enemies (2:1-3): • the world • the flesh • the Devil

  40. CHRIST IS VICTOR • By His death and resurrection, Christ overcame • The World (Jn. 16:33; Gal. 6:14). • The Flesh (Rom. 6:1-6; Gal. 2:20). • The Devil (Eph. 1:19-23). • So, as believers, we fight not for victory, but from victory.

  41. MEANS OF OUR PROTECTION: 1. KNOW THE ENEMY (6:10-12) • The leader is the Devil. • His helpers are “principalities, powers, rulers of darkness ..” • The enemy is strong, and we need the power of God to stand against him. • It is “standing”, not “fighting”.

  42. MEANS OF OUR PROTECTION 2. WEAR THE EQUIPMENT • God has provided the “whole armour”. • Equipment for defence and offence. • Don’t omit any part of it! • Satan looks for that unguarded area. 4:27.

  43. THE FULL ARMOUR • The girdle of truth. 6: 14a. • The breastplate of righteousness. 6: 14b. • The shoes of the gospel. 6: 15. • The shield of faith. 6: 16. • The helmet of salvation. 6: 17a. • The sword of the Spirit. 6: 17b.

  44. THE “WHOLE ARMOUR” IS A PICTURE OF CHRIST • Jesus Christ is: • The Truth. Jn. 14:6. • Our Righteousness. 2 Cor. 5:21. • Our Peace. Eph. 2:14. • Our Salvation. Lk. 2:30. • The Word of God. Jn. 1:1, 14. • Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Rom. 13:14.

  45. MEANS OF OUR PROTECTION:3. USE THE ENERGY: PRAYER • Pray always. • Pray “with all prayer”. • Pray in the Spirit. • Pray watching. • Keep on praying. • Pray for all the saints.

  46. ABIDE IN ME … AND I IN YOU(JOHN 15:4) • Our Position: we are seated in Christ, and blessed with all blessings. • Our Practice: we walk in Christ as Spirit-filled believers. • Our Protection: we stand in the victory of Christagainst the Devil.
