  2. HISTORY • Replaces and extends the old Pre-Olympic Congresses before each Summer Olympic Games • Fully inclusive - all major sport and exercise science partners • First new-format ICSEMIS hosted by Guangzhou, China in 2008

  3. PARTNERS Jointly owned by: • International Olympic Committee (IOC) • International Paralympic Committee (IPC) • International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) • International Council for Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE)

  5. MAIN THEME • ‘Sport … Inspiring a learning legacy’ • Echoes the inspiration theme used in the UK Olympic Games bid • The “knowledge Olympics”

OBJECTIVES • To celebrate sport sciences across the UK and internationally • To exchange sport science, clinical and pedagogic information • To promote education about science, education and medicine in sport • To encourage multi-disciplinary approaches • To network amongst researchers, pedagogues, clinicians and practitioners • To present cutting edge research and developments • To secure public engagement by young people and ordinary members of our communities

AUDIENCE • c. 5,000 delegates: researchers, professionals, practitioners, students • Largest global multidisciplinary convention of its type • Every professional sector and all international scientific and scholarly associations associated with sport, physical education, exercise and physical activity • E.g. BASES 2012 embedded in the programme

  10. LINKED ACTIVITIES • Scholarship Programme: c. 40 young professionals from developing countries • Master Classes: practical demonstrations of coaching, dance, StreetGames etc. • Science Café: for live and streamed debates on hot topics • Trade Exhibition: of 10,000sqm gross

LINKED ACTIVITIES cont. • Knowing Sport: a Public Engagement Programme in communities throughout the UK. 10 pilots kindly funded by RCUK ending soon, each with the LOCOG Inspire Mark • UEL – Open Day • U Glos – Public seminar and debate on doping • U Herts – Short demos and tours on health and physical activity • Leeds Met Univ – Narrative presentation on athletes’ experiences • LJMU/MoSI – Meet the sport scientist exhibition at Museum of Science and Industry • U West of Scotland – Public debate on genetic enhancement and sport • U Wolv – Mass running event + research on emotions • U Kent – Interactive health open day at Medway Park • U Westminster – Motivational music session with personal trainer • LeicsUniv – 3 public lectures with Q&A
