VIIRS CAL _ Val Ocean Color January 31, 2013 Stennis Update USM, NRL, SDSU
Highlights 1 - Presentations in last 3 months 1) Fargion, G.S., et al,. “VIIRS Ocean Color Data For Coastal Management” abstract AGU-San Francisco. Dec 8 – 2012 2) Arnone, R.A. et al., Applications of Emerging satellites for ocean bio-geo chemical and physical processes” invited AGU-San Francisco , Dec 8 – 2012 3) Bowers, J, et al “Exploring Regional Adjustment Of Coastal VIIRS By Repurposing On-Orbit Vicarious Calibration Methodology”, AGU-San Francisco , Dec 8 – 2012 4) S. Ladner, S., et al “Evaluation of Recent VIIRS Sensor Performance in the Coastal Ocean”, AGU-San Francisco, Dec 8 - 2012. c. 5) C. Johnson and G.S. Fargion, “Comparisons of Reflectance Targets at the Above Water Radiometry Workshop on Long Island Sound, August 4 -6, 2010” , AGU San Francisco Dec 2012. 5) Planned SPIE conferences and IGARRS 2 - VIIRS Clouds Mask - Improvement to the threshold 3 - Evaluate of MX6.6 - Negative radiance, inland waters, 4- AERONET-OC Improvements in the exclusion criteria for match up WAVE_CIS : sampling time of day limited solar angles, cal error Eureka: Time issue identified; MVC0: reprocessed NASA OCBG use AERONET-OC for validation (NASA VIIRS mtg 1/23/2013) 5 - VIIRS product validation (vicarious calibration) in coastal waters (using SAVANT) SAVANT – matchup tool updated 6. Cruise Validation: 5 cruises
VIIRS Cloud MASK (VCM) • Evaluation of VCM on Ocean Color products • comparison with “Standard Ocean color, Cloud Mask.” ( NASA, NAVY, NOAA) • - Program review in Jan 2013 • - For Color products VCM performed “Very well “. • Noted improvement to present (Threshold method) . Separates the Glint mask VCM VCM 3 3 - Confidently Cloudy VCM 2,3 2- Probably Cloudy or 3- Confidently Cloudy VCM 1,2, 3 0 – Confidently Clear 1- Probably clear 2- Probably Cloudy 3- Confidently Cloudy Caspian Sea 7-24- 2012 Present Cloud mask Albedo 865 0.027 Glint
VIIRS Coast Validation using AERONET-OC with SAVANT (tool) - Trend of the “GAIN” - Vicarious adjustment of the VIIRS using nL2 gen - Different regions show “slight” different trends .. - Waiting the MX 6.6 EDR to obtain more retrievals to run statistics on IDPS EDR - Validation within 1% based on the Average Spectral Gains !! - 442 490 555 668 By monoring the vLt/Lt over time VIIRS seems to be performing well. Some anomalies are expected as these coastal sites. Venice - AAOT nLw 668 – Low Gain ~ +2.5% Julian Day EUREKA 668 – high WAVECIS ~ +.01% +~.001%
IDPS - Over Masking Old IDPS OPERATIONAL SYSTEM Negative Radiance masking MX6.6 6.6 IDPS OPERATIONAL SYSTEM JANUARY 2013 VOCC IDPS MX6.6 Update CURRENT L2gen APS - Updates to MX6.6 Inland lakes - High Satellite angle - Do not mask as Negative but retrieve value and use Quality Flags
VOCCO Mx6.6 MX 6.6 Check out ! US East Coast GS • MX6.6 improvement to retrievals ! • Processing ocean color and not negative • Issues with differences in values (Coastal areas are high in VIIRS ) • WILL ENABLE MORE VIIRS MATCHUPS! APS (n2gen) Inland lakes ! Coastal retrievals!
Cruise Ocean VIIRS Validation 1- Key West 2- Gulf of Mexico (fisheries) 3) Carbon Flux Cruise (Gulf and East Coast) * 4 ) Glider 5) Hawaii Key West Stations bb532nm NRL n2gen ~55% more retrievals than IDPS(masking) 190 Stations Sample # Panama City, FL Backscattering 532
Summary / Plans - Update the matchup with the Mx6.6 - with VOCCO from Class within SAVANT AERONET-OC - Presentations and papers underway.. SPIE – Baltimore (4/29-5/1, 2013) Coupling VIIRS and MODIS for Coastal Processes IGARS –Australia (7/21-7/26, 2013) - Validation cruises - Gulf of Mexico - MOBY: address issues with K. Voss, re analyses analyses - Address the DR - Coastal products and aerosols
