A DEFINITIONAL FRAMEWORK • EVENTS ARE TEMPORARY OCCURENCES, EITHER PLANNED OR UNPLANNED, WITH A FINITE LENGTH OF TIME • PLANNED EVENTS HAVE A LENGTH OF TIME THAT IS USUALLY FIXED AND PUBLICIZED • SPECIAL EVENTS CAN BE DESCRIBED AS ONE-OFF OR INFREQUENTLY OCRRUING OCCASSIONS OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL PROGRAM.

Major Events are large scale (usually national or international) special events which are high in status or prestige and which attract large crowds and media attention • Hallmark Events can be referred to as those events that mark an important historical anniversary
Attributes of hallmark events • Are large in scale • Can be held on an international or national scale • Are tied to a specific place • Attract funds to the region • Attract large crowds • Are of infrequent occurrence • Incorporate festivals or other events • Incur large costs • Involve prestige and status • Involve tradition
Mega Events can attract very large numbers of event visitors or have a large cost or psychological effect. • Cultural Events. The most common form of celebrating this type of events Is through a festival. Festivals are mostly traditional with long histories. • Business or Trade Events. Fairs have a long tradition as periodic exhibitions and markets. • The term Exposition or Expo is also applied to trade and consumer shows which fall into two types: TRADE SHOWS & CONSUMER SHOWS
Meeting and educational events • Term applicable to a group of people assembled for any purpose, usually refers to a small business private event • Retreat describes a meeting that gets people away from their normal environment. • Seminar, Clinic, or Workshop are terms used for meetings focused on education. • Conclave is a very private or secret meeting
Sports events • Deals with organized and competitive occurences • Meets = describes a sports event or meeting that is organized for the purpose of competition • Championships = are meets within leagues to select winning team; they can be athlete focused, designed to select the best performer from members in a sport. • Tournament = describes a meet organized to select a winner from teams or participating players.
