Galatians 3 Law versus Faith
Problem in Galatia • Binding the Old Law of Moses on the church for acceptance with God – Acts 15 • Was not part of the original gospel – Gal.1:6-10; 3:1ff • Adding circumcision to the gospel perverts the gospel • Adding one thing demands adding all things • If now the law of Moses is needed, then faith in Jesus is insufficient • If justification comes by the law, Jesus is not needed • Can’t have it both ways. • Choose circumcision, then fall from grace
Justification by faith in Galatians • Promise of Jesus Law of Moses Faith in Jesus • Abraham Fleshly Israel Church of Christ • Faith Works Faith • Justification No Justification Justification
Gal 3:1-4 • O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have you suffered so many things in vain — if indeed it was in vain? NKJV Note: “OBEY THE TRUTH…That… portrayed Jesus as crucified = New Testament. See 2 Cor.3:6-8
The ministry of the spirit • Made the apostles “sufficient as ministers of the new covenant” – 2 Cor.3:6 with Gal.4:24 • The Spirit was guiding the apostles into “all truth” –John 16:13 • The Galatians “received the Spirit by the hearing of faith” –Gal.3:2 • By “obeying the truth” (3:1) they had “begun in the Spirit”(3:3), the new covenant “ministry of the Spirit” • God “supplies the Spirit”(3:5) in nine miraculous gifts (1 Cor.12-14) that were revealing and confirming the New Testament – Heb.1:1; 2:1-4
NKJV They BEGAN in the SPIRIT (New Testament revelations). Who fooled them into moving back to the Law of Moses?
The ministry of the Spirit = New Testament revelations • In Galatians the New Testament equivalents: • The grace of Christ -1:6 • The gospel of Christ -1:7 • The revelation of Jesus Christ -1:12 • The faith -1:23 • Our liberty -2:4 - see “perfect law of liberty” –James 1 • The truth of the gospel -2:5,14 • Obey “the truth” -3:1; 5:7 Galatians is a contrast in THE TWO COVENANTS -4:24
The ministry of the Spirit = New Testament revelations • In Galatians the New Testament equivalents: • The “covenant” of freedom -4:24-31 • The liberty -5:1 • Walk in the Spirit -5:16 • Led by the Spirit -5:18 • Live in the Spirit -5:25 • The law of Christ -6:2 • The Word -6:6 Galatians is a contrast in THE TWO COVENANTS -4:24
Nature of faith in Galatians • Obedient faith • Faith that “obeys the truth” • Faith that is “baptized into Jesus” • Faith that walks in the Spirit guidance
Galatians discusses two theoretical ways to be justified Works of Law Faith in Jesus • By believing/obeying Jesus • Based in FORGIVENESS • By keeping ALL without fail • That is WORKS of law Galatians 2:16 16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. NKJV
Two centers of emphasis THE FLESH THE SPIRIT • The supply of the Spirit • They “began in the Spirit” -3:3 • The hearing of faith -3:5 (circumcision of the heart –Rom.2:28) • Would Christians begin in the Spirit and then go back and be perfected by the flesh? • Works of Law (circumcision in the flesh)
True sons of Abraham Abraham’s Faith Before the Law of Moses Our Faith Apart from the Law of Moses • Those who are of faith in the Promised Seed • Are Blessed • Those attached to the Law of Moses -3:7 • Under a Curse -3:10
The law • Was 430 years AFTER the PROMISE to Abraham -3:17 • Was ADDED • To control transgressions – 3:19 • Was Appointed Through Angels • Was Mediated – 3:19-20 • Was NOT an annulment of the Promises • Could Not give LIFE -21 • Could NOT give righteousness – 21 • Kept the Jews under GUARD – 23 • Was a TUTOR • To get people ready for Jesus
The Promise • Was Someone • Was Someone to believe • Was regarding the SEED • Was regarding JESUS, The SEED • Was the object of FAITH • WAS WHO ABRAHAM Believed and WHO Christians believe
The faith of Abraham • Was in the GOSPEL of the coming SEED • He did not know the NAME of Jesus • Did not include being baptized into Him • Only Comparison IS: • FAITH APART FROM WORKS OF THE LAW OF MOSES
The faith of Abraham • Only Comparison IS: • FAITH APART FROM WORKS OF THE LAW OF MOSES • Ours is different in these ways: • 1. Gospel of the SEED WHO HAS COME • 2. WE are not allowed to believe in a still future seed • 3. We DO have to know His NAME • 4. We do have to believe in JESUS specifically • 5. We do have to be baptized into Jesus Christ – 3:27
What Relates Us to Abraham? • Justification by faith in the Promised SEED • Justification apart from the Law of Moses • Descendants of common faith in the Seed (Christ) • ALL people can enjoy the blessings of this common Savior
Children of god • Through faith in Jesus Christ -3:26 • For (gar=because) baptized into Christ and put on Christ -3:27 • One in Christ Jesus -28 • You are Christ’s -29 • Abraham’s seed • Heirs
