  1. Starter Using the cards, place the parts of the speech in the order you think they should go in Public Speaking – Lesson 5 Lesson Objective: To identify what makes an effective Introduction to a speech

  2. New Words • Tricolon • Flattery • Eloquent • Colloquial

  3. The 6 parts of a speech: • Introduction – grab the audiences attention, establish yourself as an authority figure – Your ETHOS appeal • Narration - You clearly state the area of the argument / topic and set out the facts of the case as generally understood • Division – this is where you can say what you and your opponents agree about, and the areas where you disagree • Proof – Set out the arguments supporting your case – Your LOGOS • Refutation – this is where you consider what the opposition would say and smash their side of the argument into tiny pieces • Conclusion – sum up all that has been said – reiterating the main points – this is where the PATHOS will come into play the most

  4. Introduction – how to do it well • The aim of the introduction is to put the audience into a receptive and attentive frame of mind • Make them believe that they will really enjoy / learn from your speech • Tell them why it’s YOU who is talking to them

  5. A great example: the colloquial speaker “Thank you. I am honoured to be with you today for your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. Truth be told, I never graduated from college, and this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.”

  6. A great example: the eloquent speaker “I stand before you today, the representative of a family in grief, in a country in mourning, before a world in shock. We are all united, not only in our desire to pay our respects to Diana but rather in our need to do so. For such was her extraordinary appeal that the tens of millions of people taking part in this service all over the world, via television and radio, who never actually met her, feel that they too, lost someone close to them in the early hours of Sunday morning. It is a more remarkable tribute to Diana than I can ever hope to offer her today.”

  7. Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got I'm still, I'm still Jenny from the block Used to have a little, now I have a lot No matter where I go, I know where I came from (from the Bronx!) Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got I'm still, I'm still Jenny from the block Used to have a little, now I have a lot No matter where I go, I know where I came from (from the Bronx!)

  8. Answer the questions in FULL sentences with quotes • In Steve Job’s speech what techniques are being used to grab the audience’s attention? • How does he present his ETHOS? • How does the style or tone of the speech appeal to the target audience? • In Earl Spencer’s speech what techniques does he use to grab the audience’s attention? • How does he create a bond between the audience and himself? • Which speech do you think is most effective as an introduction and why?
