I. What is a Customhouse broker?A. Licensed individual or company authorized to transact Customs business on the IOR’s behalf. 1. Should have a valid P of A on file 2. Should be licensed by the US Customs Service 3. Should represent and protect the interests of the IOR with the corresponding authorities. 4. Should have an excellent understanding of trade requirements and procedures. www.lmchb.com
II. ResponsibilitiesA. Compliance 1. Must comply with all Federal and local authorities.i. Rules, regulations, policies, procedures USDA, FDA, EPA, NTSA, Fish and Wildlife, etc.B. File and pay 1. Must have the capacity to transmit, calculate and pay any duties and/or taxes owed to the Department of the Treasury or other Government Agency. www.lmchb.com
C. Advise and Inform 1. We as brokers have the responsibility to advise and inform our customers.i. Valuation, Classification, Free Trade Agreements, CBP programs (C-TPAT), etc. 2. Brokers should be an extension of their customers. www.lmchb.com
III. Recommendations:A. Know them 1. Establish a relationship with them, they are important in your supply chain.Even if they were contracted by your supplier in Mexico. You should feel comfortable working with them.B. Use them and their resources 1. Reporting 2. Consult www.lmchb.com
C. Review them at least twice a year. 1. Performance Response times for processing shipments 2. Compliance i. Relationship with authorities ii. Do they keep current with government regulations and policy changes. iii. Late files? 3. How accessible are they?i. Can you talk to them fairly easy? www.lmchb.com
