Healthcare Lesson starter: Describe two ways in which poor housing caused health problems.
Today we will… • Understand how people treated illness in the past • Identify some changes which improved health
Until 1948, very few people could afford to see a doctor • Many diseases were treated by isolating patients as opposed to making them better • Some people had health insurance which meant they could see a doctor if they fell ill
Home remedies • Bathing sore eyes with cold tea • Rubbing a stye with a gold wedding ring • Drinking hot cider for a cold • Oil and mustard on a bad chest with a sock tied round the neck • Straight gin or whisky rubbed on toothache • A beer, a raw onion and a piece of cheese every night at 8pm for bladder problems • An orange each day before breakfast for alcoholism
Improvements • Many improvements were introduced during the 20th century to improve the health of the nations • These included free school meals, benefits and the NHS
Today’s Tasks • Copy out the list of House remedies on page 7 of the Health booklet. • Why do you think people were willing to try such strange ideas? Write down your ideas. • Copy the diagram on page 8 into your jotter with the heading ‘Improvements in Health’
