  3. Pre-primary education • Nursery school (0-3 yrs) • Kindergarten (3-6/7 yrs) -One compulsory year

  4. Compulsory schooling (7-18 yrs) • Language: Hungarian or bilingual (English, German or minority languages) • Special schools for mentally handicapped • Integrated education • Public and private schools

  5. Schoolyear: from September to June • Autumn, winter and spring holiday • Five working days, 4-8 lessons per day • 45-minute classes, 10-20 minute breaks

  6. A level can be repeated at any grade except for the first of elementary school • Free school choice

  7. Primary schools (7-14 yrs) Junior section (7-10 yrs) • 1st-3rd grade: only written analysis • above: 1-5 numeric scale • basic skills Senior section (11-14 yrs) • Hungarian, foreign language, History, Maths, Science…

  8. Secondary education (14-18/19/20 yrs) Grammar schools • give general knowledge • usually have a subject speciality • 4 or 5 years Special: 6- or 8-year grammar schools

  9. Vocational training schools • 4 years • Vocational secondary school certificate • Opportunity to continue studies at university

  10. Apprenticeship schools • 3-year training programs • Skilled worker certificate • Students go directly to employment • They may attend college after an additional secondary school program

  11. Érettségi – final exam • Two-tier system: mid- and upper-level • Oral and written • Taking some subjects earlier is possible • Compulsory: Hungarian grammar and literature, Maths, History, one foreign language, another chosen subject

  12. Higher education • Complicated enrollment point-system • Colleges and universities • Credit system • three-tier education: BA or BSc, Ma or MSc, Ph. D. • Adult training
