Finding Batting Average • Step 1 Add up your hits. • Example: 35 hits • Step 2 Add up your at bats. At bats include every time you hit safely or hit into an out, including a strike out. Getting on base by an error or fielder's choice is considered an out. A sacrifice, walk or hit by pitch is not counted as a hit or an out. • Example: 98 at bats • Step 3 Divide your hits by your at bats. • Example: 35/98 = .357142857 • Step 4 Round off the number to the third decimal place. • Example: .357142857 is .357.
Let’s do a problem! • Derek Jeter has had 246 at bats with having 50 singles, 34 doubles, 3 triples, and 3 homeruns. What is his batting average? • Step 1: Add his hits: 50 + 34 + 3 + 3 = 90 • Step 2: Add his at bats: 246 • Step 3: Divide hits and at bats: 90/246 = .3658 • Step 4: Round to nearest hundredth: .366 • ANSWER: Derek Jeter is batting .366
